Downtown Tucson Public Art Is Hiding in Plain Sight

Have you ever stopped at a red light on Congress Street or Broadway Boulevard, looked over at a dull, gray utility box, and thought, โ€œMan, this desert city is too beautiful for something so industrialโ€?

Pen Macias brings playful Tucson storytelling to the streets with this joyful utility box design.

If youโ€™ve driven or walked through Downtown Tucson recently, you might have noticed those exact gray boxes have completely transformed. They are now vibrant, storytelling canvases that celebrate the culture, history, and natural wonders of the Old Pueblo.

Iโ€™m incredibly proud to have served on the public art community selection committee for โ€œThatโ€™s a Wrap: Downtownโ€™s Utility Box Art,โ€ a brilliant project funded by the Arts Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona, Rio Nuevo, and the City of Tucson. Along with a very dedicated panel, we had the honor of selecting five phenomenal regional artistsโ€”Jodie Lewers Chertudi, Maxie Adler, Pato Aguilar, Peniel Macias, and Porter McDonaldโ€”to bring ten public utility boxes to life using durable, custom vinyl wraps.

Personal note: The person who did the actual wrapping on all of those boxes should get some kind of award. The wraps are so pristine, and some of those boxes were very complicated.

Serving on this committee reminded me of a fundamental truth that guides everything we do at The Tucson Gallery: art should not be confined to four walls. While galleries provide a beautiful sanctuary for collectors, public art serves as the heartbeat of a community. It belongs to everyone. It elevates our everyday routines, keeps local history alive, and sparks vital conversations on our sidewalks.

It instantly brings smiles to faces and joy to the hearts of the people who stop to take it in. I see this every week in our art gallery. It is why I love our gallery: it brings me that same joy, both taking it in and watching others feel it as well.

Meeting the Artists: Stories on the Streets of Tucson

Each of the chosen artists brought two distinct designs to our downtown streets, weaving deep cultural and environmental narratives into the fabric of the city.

Even up close, the wrapped utility boxes show beautiful detail, color, and craftsmanship.

Wildlife and desert resilience

Maxie Adler

O:แนฃhad Returns hits close to home, inspired by the real-life jaguar spotted in our Sky Islands in 2024. Named O:แนฃhad ร‘u:kudam (Jaguar Protector) by Tohono O’odham Nation elders, Maxieโ€™s work serves as a powerful reminder of wildlife resiliency and environmental cohabitation in the desert.

Playful Tucson storytelling

Pen Macias

Pen Macias, also known as Peniel Macias, brings pure Tucson joy with playful, whimsical storytelling. Pieces like Prickly Pair Commute feature a Gila monster and a kangaroo rat zipping down 6th Ave on a moped, while Hotel de Tucson, a Prickly Paradise visualizes a bustling desert hotel carved inside a giant saguaro. We have some of Pen’s art in our gallery.

Local history and nostalgia

Porter McDonald

Porter McDonald took us on a nostalgic trip through local business history. His Wig-O-Rama Tribute honors the iconic local wig store that stood at 98 E. Congress Street from 1976 to 2013, while his Access Tucson Tribute honors the historic public-access television station once located at 124 E. Broadway Blvd.

I have a funny story involving my assistant Beth and Wig-O-Rama from over 20 years ago, so this one was dear to my heart.

Desert blooms after dark

Jodie Lewers Chertudi

Jodie Lewers Chertudi captured the magic of the desert after dark. Her designs, Sacred Datura and Queen of the Night, focus on native nocturnal flora that bloom under the moon, complete with stenciled hawkmoths on the pavement to engage pedestrians waiting to cross the street.

Love, memory, and awareness

Pato Aguilar

Pato Aguilar injected profound emotion and awareness into the project. His piece Lasso of Love reminds us all that love is a powerful force for good, while RedSunset serves as a poignant, critical tribute to the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) crisisโ€”a vital issue given that Tucson ranks tragically high in these national cases.

Why Small Public Art Projects Make a Massive Impact

When people think of public art, they often think of multi-million dollar sculptures or massive building murals. But local street-level projects like โ€œThatโ€™s a Wrapโ€ are just as vital.

  1. They make art accessible.
Not everyone walks into an art gallery, but everyone uses public streets. By transforming mundane infrastructure into street art, we democratize the art-viewing experience.
  2. They combat visual pollution.
Replacing bare metal boxes with local imagery reduces urban blight and deters vandalism, replacing cold steel with community pride.
  3. They support the local creative economy.
This project directly employed Tucson artists and utilized local production partnerships, like Arizona Lithographers, keeping economic support completely within our community.
  4. They keep the stories alive.
Living in Tucson my whole life, I remember those stories when I see the utility boxes like Wig-O-Rama and the public TV station. I thought the antenna was for alien communication when I was a kid.

Come Explore the Old Puebloโ€™s Living Canvas

Wrapped utility box art on Congress Street near Hotel Congress in Downtown Tucson
Public art turns a walk through Downtown Tucson into a self-guided gallery experience.

Next time you are walking to dinner downtown, catching a show at the Rialto, or visiting us at The Tucson Gallery, I challenge you to put down your phone and look around. Take a self-guided tour of the utility boxes on Congress and Broadway. Read the artist statements, appreciate the details, and feel the pulse of our community.

Art is what makes Tucson, Tucson. It reflects our past, anchors our present, and dreams up our future. We are honored to be a part of a community that values its creatives, and we look forward to continuing to bridge the gap between local artists and art lovers right here in the desert.

FAQ: Downtown Tucson Utility Box Art and Public Art

What is โ€œThatโ€™s a Wrap: Downtownโ€™s Utility Box Artโ€?

โ€œThatโ€™s a Wrap: Downtownโ€™s Utility Box Artโ€ is a public art project that transformed ten downtown utility boxes into vibrant works of art using durable custom vinyl wraps. The project features designs by five regional artists and brings color, storytelling, and local culture to everyday spaces along Congress Street and Broadway Boulevard.

Who funded the Downtown Tucson utility box art project?

The project was funded by the Arts Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona, Rio Nuevo, and the City of Tucson. Together, these organizations helped support local artists while making public art more visible and accessible in Downtown Tucson.

Which artists were selected for the project?

The five selected regional artists are Jodie Lewers Chertudi, Maxie Adler, Pato Aguilar, Peniel Macias, and Porter McDonald. Each artist created two distinct designs, bringing a wide range of stories, styles, and Tucson-inspired themes to the downtown streetscape.

Where can I see the wrapped utility boxes in Downtown Tucson?

The utility boxes are located throughout Downtown Tucson, including areas along Congress Street and Broadway Boulevard. Visitors can take a self-guided walk downtown to discover the artwork, read the artist statements, and enjoy the details up close.

Why is public art important in Tucson?

Public art helps make Tucson feel alive, welcoming, and connected to its history. It turns ordinary spaces into places of beauty, reflection, and conversation. Projects like these also make art accessible to everyone, whether they are walking to dinner, waiting at a light, visiting a gallery, or simply exploring downtown.

How does public art support local artists?

Public art projects create paid opportunities for local and regional artists, while also giving their work a highly visible platform. Instead of being seen only inside a gallery or studio, their art becomes part of the city itself, reaching residents, visitors, and future art lovers every day.

Can I learn more about the artists and the project map?

Yes. The official ArcGIS StoryMap includes a full breakdown of the project, artist backgrounds, artwork locations, and additional context. It is a great resource for anyone who wants to take a deeper look at the Downtown Tucson utility box art project.

Where can I find more Tucson public art and murals?

For murals, visitors can explore the constantly evolving interactive Tucson mural map or join a Tucson Trolley Tours mural tour. To bring Tucson-inspired artwork home, you can also visit The Tucson Gallery online or in person to discover local artists and mural-inspired art.

๐Ÿ‘œ TimberTote Wooden Purses at Tucson Gallery

A TimberTote looks like it shouldnโ€™t existโ€”then you pick it up, and suddenly a wooden purse feels like the most natural thing in the world.

Available in-store at Tucson Gallery in downtown Tucson. Call 520-606-5440 to check current stock.

Each TimberTote starts as birch wood thatโ€™s carefully cut with a pattern of tiny relief lines called a โ€œliving hinge,โ€ allowing the wood to bend and curve without breaking. The result is a graceful, arching wooden body paired with bold colors, custom-printed fabrics, and hardware that feels as special as the art it carries.

At Tucson Gallery, youโ€™ll find a rotating collection of TimberTote purses and accessories, some featuring artwork by our own gallery artists, so you can literally wear a piece of Tucson art on your arm.

โœจ Soโ€ฆ What Exactly Is a TimberTote?

Close-up of TimberTote wooden purse showing living-hinge detail and hardware
Tiny relief cuts create a โ€œliving hinge,โ€ letting each TimberTote curve and flex like fabric while staying strong like wood.

Think of TimberTote as a collaboration between:

  • a woodworker who figured out how to bend wood like fabric, and
  • a fashion designer who refuses to make boring bags.

From there, they pulled in even more creatives: tattoo artists engraving designs into the outside panels, muralists whose artwork is printed onto the interior fabrics, and now Tucson Gallery artists whose work shows up on the linings and graphics of select bags.

Each purse is:

  • Cut from premium birch plywood, stained in rich colors or natural finishes
  • Lined with 100% cotton fabric thatโ€™s adhered to the wood before cutting so the inside feels as intentional as the outside
  • Finished by hand with hardware, straps, and stitching that match the artwork and stain
  • Designed and made in Tucson by the TimberTote team and their artist collaborators

Theyโ€™re real, functional handbagsโ€”but theyโ€™re also conversation-starting sculptures that happen to carry your keys.

๐Ÿ‘€ At A Glance

Details vary by design, but hereโ€™s what most TimberTote purses at Tucson Gallery have in common:

  • Material: Birchwood exterior with living-hinge relief cuts, cotton interior, quality hardware
  • Designs: Classic stains, Fantasy Collection pieces, U of Aโ€“inspired styles, and bags featuring Tucson Gallery artwork
  • Origin: Designed and handcrafted in Tucson, Arizona
  • Price range: Approximately $80โ€“$160 depending on style and collectionLocal First Arizona
  • Wear: Adjustable straps or chains, finished interiors, fully functional everyday bags
  • Availability: Small-batch runs, so styles come and goโ€”once a favorite design sells out, it may not return exactly the same

โค๏ธ Why Youโ€™ll Love TimberTote Purses

TimberTotes get the same reaction over and over:
first a double take, then a smile, then, โ€œWaitโ€ฆthis is wood??โ€

Hereโ€™s what makes them so fun to carry (and to gift):

  • Theyโ€™re jaw-droppingly unexpected.
A wooden purse already stands out. Add rich stains, engraved artwork, and illustrated linings, and it becomes an instant โ€œWhere did you get that?โ€ piece.Local First Arizona
  • Theyโ€™re genuinely usable.
These arenโ€™t fragile art objects youโ€™re afraid to touch. The living hinge and reinforced construction make them comfortable to open, close, and carry.
  • The inside is part of the art.
Look closely and youโ€™ll find collaged storybook scenes, fantasy illustrations, university motifs, and original art prints turned into fabric.
  • They feel local in the best way.
Born from a collaboration inside Proper Shops right here in downtown Tucson, TimberTotes are rooted in the same creative community that powers Tucson Gallery.
  • They tell people who you are.
Bookish kid? Thereโ€™s a bookshelves or book-page interior. Fairy-tale lover? Fantasy Collection. Diehard Wildcat? U of A block-A designs. Art collector? TimberTotes featuring work from Tucson Gallery artists.

๐Ÿชต Thoughtful Design & Quality Materials

One of the most exciting things about TimberTote is how often other artists are invited into the process. Some bags:

  • Feature engraved graphics created by tattoo artists like Jenny Burghard
  • Use interior fabrics printed with murals by local artists such as Ignacio
  • Showcase special prints and patterns inspired by (or directly featuring) Tucson Gallery artists, available only through our gallery

That means the TimberTote you pick up here might be a three-way collaboration: woodworker, fashion designer, and visual artistโ€”all wrapped up into one wearable piece of art.

๐ŸŽ The Perfect Gift for…

Assorted TimberTote wooden purses in different colors and designs displayed together
From classic stains to artist collaborations, our TimberTote selection is always changingโ€”no two displays look the same for long.

TimberTote purses make especially good gifts (including โ€œfrom me, to meโ€) for:

  • Fashion lovers who collect unusual handbags and small-batch accessories
  • Art fans & gallery regulars who want a piece of Tucson art they can carry every day
  • U of A alumni & Wildcats superfans who will happily rock a wooden purse with a block A and campus-inspired artTimberTote+1
  • Makers & designers who geek out over craft, engineering, and materials
  • Visitors to Tucson looking for that one show-stopping souvenir they wonโ€™t see back home
  • Anyone who hears โ€œYou canโ€™t wear woodโ€ and thinks โ€œโ€ฆwatch me.โ€Local First Arizona

๐ŸŸก Playable ART Ball at Tucson Gallery

A rainbow string of wooden balls that moonlights as a stress ball, sculpture, and tiny phone stand.

Available in-store at Tucson Gallery in downtown Tucson. Call 520-606-5440 to check current stock.

The Playable ART Ball is what happens when a classic stress ball grows up, discovers color, and moves into an art gallery. At Tucson Gallery, this strand of twenty rainbow wooden spheres is constantly being twisted into circles, waves, stands, and creatures dreamed up by little kids and big kids at heart. Itโ€™s part fidget toy, part modern sculpture, and part โ€œI canโ€™t believe this is my new favorite souvenir from Tucson.โ€

โœจ Soโ€ฆ what is the Playable ART Ball?

The Playable ART Ball is a strand of 20 wooden spheres joined together so you can twist, loop, stack, and squish them into all kinds of shapes. One minute itโ€™s a neat circle. The next, itโ€™s a wave. Then itโ€™s suddenly holding your phone, propping up a note, or becoming some wild abstract creature invented by a 4-year-old.

We love it because it doesnโ€™t tell you what it wants to be. It just quietly waits for little hands (or very bored grown-up hands) to pick it up and start experimenting.

Curve, stack, and twist the Playable ART Ball into graceful curves and abstract designs for your desk or coffee table.

๐Ÿ‘€ At A Glance

  • Ages: 3 to 99
  • What you get: 20 interconnected wooden balls in 10 bright colors
  • Ball size: 1.38″ diameter โ€“ easy for little hands to grab
  • Package size: 8 x 8 x 1.75 inches โ€“ nice and flat for packing in a suitcase
  • Materials:
  • FSC-certified beech wood (Italy)
  • Non-toxic, water-based color dyes (Germany)
  • Phthalate-free, durable POM plastic connectors (Taiwan)
  • Made in: Designed in Germany, manufactured in Taiwan
  • Safety: Conforms to CPSIA, EN-71 & ASTM F963 safety standards
  • Warning: Choking hazard โ€“ contains small parts, not for children under 3

Itโ€™s sturdy, bright, and built to survive years of twisting, fidgeting, and โ€œLook what I made!โ€ moments.

โค๏ธ Why Youโ€™ll Love the Playable ART Ball

This is one of those objects people pick up โ€œjust to see what it feels like,โ€ and suddenly itโ€™s ten minutes later.

  • Itโ€™s a stress ball with an upgrade.
Instead of squeezing a sad foam blob, youโ€™re handling smooth, weighty wood with satisfying clicks and curves. Your nervous energy gets an art degree.
  • Little kids turn it into everything.
Snake, bracelet, bridge, animal, nest, crownโ€ฆ give a 3-year-old the Playable ART Ball and youโ€™ll find out what it really wants to be.
  • Grown-ups turn it into a desk buddy.
On a workday, it becomes a phone stand, a pen rest, or a little splash of color curled around your keyboard.
  • It invites mini design experiments.
Curve it, stack it, spiral it, make it hug the corner of a book. Every shape is a tiny design challenge you solved with your hands.
  • Zero batteries, zero instructions.
It doesnโ€™t light up, beep, or talk. It just quietly encourages imaginative playโ€”and thatโ€™s kind of refreshing.

๐Ÿชต Thoughtful Design & Quality Materials

The Playable ART Ball is made to feel good in your hands and look good on your desk.

  • FSC-certified beech wood gives each ball a sturdy, smooth feel.
  • Big, rounded spheres are easy for younger kids to grasp and safe for supervised play (ages 3+).
  • Non-toxic, water-based dyes make the colors pop without harsh chemicals.
  • Durable connectors are engineered to twist again and again without giving up.

This is the sort of thing youโ€™ll still have around in a few years, not something that gets lost in the bottom of a toy bin the same week you buy it.

Watch the Playable ART Cube in action and see how it transforms from a tiny cube into endless shapes.

๐ŸŽฒ How to Play

There isnโ€™t one โ€œcorrectโ€ way to use the Playable ART Ball, which is the whole point. But here are a few ideas to get started:

  1. The Classic Circle
Bend the strand into a perfect ring. It sounds simple, but getting the curve just right is strangely satisfying.
  2. The Wave
Make a fluid zig-zag and see how tall or long you can make your wave before it tips over.
  3. The Stand
Wrap and tuck the balls until they hold a pen, your phone, or a small note with a reminder like โ€œCall Tucson Gallery.โ€
  4. The Creature
Ask a kid to make an animal. Youโ€™ll probably get a dragon, dinosaur, or โ€œoctopus but with too many legs,โ€ and itโ€™ll be awesome.
  5. The Mash-Up
Combine it with another Playable ART Ball, the Playable ART Cube, or other connector pieces to create strangely wonderful mega-sculptures.

And when youโ€™re done? Just scrunch it back into a compact shape and plop it back on the shelfโ€”ready for the next idea.

๐ŸŽ The Perfect Gift for…

Think of the Playable ART Ball as a โ€œone-size-fits-manyโ€ kind of present:

  • Little kids (3+) who love anything colorful and touchable.
  • Parents & grandparents who want toys that encourage open-ended play instead of more screen time.
  • Tucson visitors looking for a souvenir thatโ€™s small in size but big in creativity.
  • Teachers & therapists who use tactile tools to help kids focus or self-regulate.
  • Office humans who live on Zoom and need something better than clicking a pen.
  • Design lovers who appreciate objects that are both playful and aesthetically pleasing.
  • The person who already has fidget toys and doesnโ€™t need another plastic spinner.

Wrap it, gift it, or โ€œaccidentallyโ€ keep it for yourself. We wonโ€™t tell.

๐Ÿœ๏ธ Why We Love It at Tucson Gallery

Playable ART Ball colorful wooden stress ball twisted into a sculptural shape
The Playable ART Ball twists and turns into endless sculptural shapes, making it a fun, creative souvenir for little kids and big kids at heart.

Weโ€™re a fine art gallery that also has a soft spot for things you canโ€™t stop touchingโ€”and the Playable ART Ball hits that sweet spot perfectly.

Itโ€™s bright and sculptural enough to look at home next to contemporary art, but it begs to be picked up and rearranged. Weโ€™ve watched kids, teens, and full-grown adults lean over a shelf โ€œjust to try it,โ€ and then build three or four shapes before they even realize theyโ€™re hooked.

It also pairs beautifully with our other playable pieces, like the Playable ART Cube. One is all about crisp angles and cubes; this one is all curves and circles. Together, they turn a coffee table into a tiny, ever-changing gallery.

๐ŸŽฒ How to Play

You donโ€™t need instructionsโ€”but hereโ€™s a quick guide anyway:

  1. Start with the perfect cube.
Hold the 2.5″ wooden cube in your hand and feel how solid it is.
  2. Gently twist and unfold.
Rotate and bend the blocks along the cord to โ€œexplodeโ€ the cube into a long, flexible chain.
  3. Experiment with shapes.
Loop it, stack it, twist it into arches, towers, bridges, and abstract sculptures. Thereโ€™s no wrong way to build.
  4. Try to get back to cube form.
The real puzzle? Thereโ€™s only one way to fold everything back into a flawless cube. Can you find it?
  5. Repeatโ€ฆ endlessly.
When you get bored of one design, bend it into another. Itโ€™s the most creative little loop youโ€™ll ever be stuck in.

๐ŸŽ The Perfect Gift for…

  • Kids 6+ who love building, tinkering, and fidgeting with their hands.
  • Parents & grandparents looking for a creative, screen-free gift.
  • Tucson visitors who want a unique, packable souvenir that isnโ€™t just another t-shirt.
  • Designers, architects, and creatives who want a playful desk sculpture to spark ideas.
  • Teachers, therapists, and counselors looking for a simple, tactile focus tool.
  • Office gift exchanges & stocking stuffers when you need something fun that works for almost anyone.
  • The person who has everything but definitely doesnโ€™t have this.

๐Ÿœ๏ธ Why We Love It at Tucson Gallery

Playable ART Cube shown mid-transformation between cube and open shape
The Playable ART Cube bends and folds through countless shapes before snapping back into a single perfect cube.

At Tucson Gallery, weโ€™re all about art you can live with, not just look at once and walk away from. The Playable ART Cube fits right into that philosophy. Itโ€™s colorful, modern, and interactive, blurring the line between toy and sculpture.

We also love how it invites people to think like artists and designers. Every time you twist it into a new configuration, youโ€™re making a tiny, temporary piece of architecture. Kids get hooked on it, but honestly, adults might love it even more.

Itโ€™s one of our favorite recommendations when someone says, โ€œI want a Tucson souvenir thatโ€™s small, creative, and not the same thing everyone else buys.โ€

๐Ÿ”ท CMY Cubes at The Tucson Gallery

Right when you think youโ€™ve seen every kind of โ€œcool little desk toyโ€ out there, CMY Cubes show up and completely steal the show. These colorful, transparent shapes use primary colors to bend light, mix hues, and turn a simple turn-in-your-hand into a tiny science experiment.

Theyโ€™re playful, beautiful, and ridiculously hard to put downโ€”perfect gifts for kids, adults, fidgeters, creatives, and anyone who loves color. They also make fun, packable souvenirs to remember your time in Tucson.

๐ŸŒˆ What are CMY Cubes?

CMY Cubes are interactive, translucent cubes made using the primary colors Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow (CMY). Each face is a different filter, and as you rotate the cube:

  • Colors overlap and blend into new shades
  • Light breaks into vibrant, shifting gradients
  • You literally view life and light through a different lens

Set one in the sun or under a lamp and youโ€™ll see the room light up with colorful reflections and shadows. It feels part science experiment, part art piece, part mesmerizing fidget toyโ€”and an unforgettable souvenir from your visit to The Tucson Gallery.

Warning: CMY Cubes are addictive. One โ€œlet me see that for a secondโ€ turns into ten minutes of turning it over and saying, โ€œOkayโ€ฆ thatโ€™s actually really cool.โ€ Thatโ€™s what makes them such fun gifts.

๐Ÿ˜ Why people get hooked on CMY Cubes as gifts and souvenirs

CMY Cubes are:

  • Hands-on and interactive โ€“ not just something you look at, but something you play with
  • Perfect for curious minds โ€“ great for teaching kids about color mixing and light
  • Desk- and shelf-friendly โ€“ they look like modern art when theyโ€™re just sitting there
  • Stress-relieving โ€“ turning them slowly in your hand is oddly calming
  • Easy to pack โ€“ ideal souvenirs to take home from Tucson or share with friends and family

Theyโ€™re the kind of object that makes people ask, โ€œWhere did you get that?โ€โ€”which is exactly what you want from a great gift or souvenir.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Meet the Ignis CMY Tetrahedron

If you love the cube, youโ€™ll geek out over its geometric cousin: the Ignis CMY Tetrahedron.

This beautiful shape is a polyhedron with four triangular faces, six straight edges, and four corners. Itโ€™s the simplest of all the ordinary convex polyhedra and one of the five classic Platonic solidsโ€”math, science, and art all rolled into one collectible souvenir.

With the same Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow magic:

  • Each triangular face filters light differently
  • Rotating it reveals totally different color blends than the cube
  • It looks like a tiny sculpture of light, color, and geometry

The tetrahedron is perfect for:

  • Science and math lovers who appreciate clever gifts
  • Modern, minimalist dรฉcor with a story behind it
  • Anyone who loves Platonic solids, design, or just really cool objects that double as souvenirs

๐Ÿงฉ Aeternus Aenigma: The Color-Changing CMY Puzzle

CMY Cubes doesnโ€™t stop at cubes and tetrahedronsโ€”meet the Aeternus Aenigma, a mind-bending, color-changing puzzle that takes things to a whole new level.

This NEW CMY puzzle is unlike any rainbow puzzle youโ€™ve seen before. Instead of having just one fixed color state, the Aeternus Aenigma has four distinct color states that shift and transform depending on your viewing angle. Tilt it, turn it, and suddenly youโ€™re looking at a completely different palette.

Itโ€™s part art piece, part brain teaser, and completely mesmerizingโ€”perfect for:

  • Curious kids and adults who love a challenge
  • STEM and art lovers who appreciate clever design
  • Unique gifts and unforgettable Tucson souvenirs

You really have to see it in person to appreciate how dramatically the colors change. Come into The Tucson Gallery, pick it up, twist it around, and watch the Aeternus Aenigma reveal all four of its color personalitiesโ€”then grab one as the perfect holiday gift or take-home souvenir from downtown Tucson.

๐ŸŒ MOVA Globes at The Tucson Gallery

Mesmerizing, self-spinning globes that make seriously cool gifts

Step into The Tucson Gallery and youโ€™ll see them right away. Beautiful globes quietly spinning on their stands with no cords, no batteries, and no obvious โ€œhow is that even happening?โ€ explanation. Those are MOVAยฎ Globes, and yes, theyโ€™re just as magical as they look.

Whether youโ€™re shopping for a science lover, a space nerd, a world traveler, or that one person who โ€œhas everything,โ€ a MOVA Globe makes an unforgettable holiday gift.

โœจ Soโ€ฆ what is a MOVA Globe?

A MOVA Globe is a self-rotating globe that runs on ambient light and the Earthโ€™s magnetic field. Inside a clear outer shell is an inner globe that floats in a special liquid and slowly turns all on its own. Hidden solar cells inside the globe capture light, and tiny magnets interact with the Earthโ€™s magnetic field to create that smooth, constant spinโ€”no cords, no batteries, no noise.

Many of the designs use real satellite and NASA imagery for their space and planetary globes, so youโ€™re not just looking at pretty artโ€”youโ€™re looking at accurate, high-resolution views of things like the Moon, the Earth, or even the Sun.

Set one on a desk, bookshelf, entry table, or home office and it becomes an instant โ€œwaitโ€ฆ what is that?โ€ conversation piece.

โค๏ธ Why people love MOVA Globes

Hereโ€™s what makes these such great gifts:

  • They never need charging. MOVA Globes are powered by everyday indoor lightโ€”LED, fluorescent, indirect sunlightโ€”so they quietly spin whenever thereโ€™s enough light in the room.
  • Theyโ€™re made for indoors. They actually work best in ambient, indoor light and donโ€™t need to live in a window or outside (in fact, avoiding harsh direct sun helps preserve the artwork).
  • Theyโ€™re whisper-quiet. No humming motor, no ticking mechanismโ€”just a slow, calming rotation thatโ€™s oddly soothing to watch.
  • Tons of styles. From classic world maps to constellations and planets, thereโ€™s a globe that matches just about anyoneโ€™s personality or dรฉcor.
  • Theyโ€™re built to last. With a durable acrylic outer shell and a sealed, low-maintenance design, MOVA Globes are made to be enjoyed for years with just the occasional gentle wipe-down.

In other words: itโ€™s part art, part science, part magic trickโ€”and 100% gift-worthy.

๐ŸŽ The perfect holiday gift (that you really need to see in person)

Online photos are great, but MOVA Globes are one of those things you truly have to see in motion to appreciate. In the gallery, you can:

  • Watch different designs spin side-by-side
  • Compare sizes and bases to find the right look for a desk, mantel, or display shelf
  • Get ideas for pairing a MOVA Globe with other local artwork or dรฉcor pieces as a themed gift

Our team is happy to help you pick the perfect globe for:

  • โ€œIโ€™m totally keeping this for myselfโ€ moments
  • Holiday gifting (theyโ€™re a huge hit for Christmas, Hanukkah, and office gift exchanges)
  • Client appreciation or closing gifts
  • Graduation, retirement, and milestone birthdays
