The desert tortoise is a herbivore who enjoys rocky hillsides and the base of mountains, and burrows using his short limbs for shelter from heat and hibernation. Like its large protective shell, the desert tortoise is protected by law.
The century plant is one of over two hundred species of agave. It is striking when its tall stalk covered with flowers emerges from its center. These colorful and unique blooms should be admired and enjoyed, for this agave only blooms once in its lifetime.
Sonoita, Willcox and the Verde Valley comprise Arizona’s major winegrowing regions. All are designated as American Viticultural Areas. Wineries in these areas host tasting rooms and dining, but you can find extraordinary Arizona wines on menus in dining establishments around the state.
The family-focused quail mates for life, making it a creature of devotion and loyalty and symbol of courage and harmony. This is obvious when you see the quail families quickly scurry around the desert while the parents are watching and protecting their many young, and accounting for all of their young.
